Placeholding

This is turning out to be a busy week for me. When I am busy, the blog suffers. And when the blog suffers, so do I.

This is because the blog and I are one. It is I and I am it.

All of this is to say that I don’t want it to lie dormant and unattended. So I must put something up there. And, today, that something is this:

Hi Ben,
–There’s no place to comment on your latest ‘Perspectives’ article [http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090224&content_id=514885&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp], so I thought I’d throw my $0.02 out over here.
–It’s funny how organized baseball tends to ignore things like steroids, tobacco and energy drinks at their convenience. Considering how many minor league clubs claim to be promoting family entertainment, you would hope that their promotions departments could come up with some healthy themes.
–Of course, it’s a bit tricky coming up with health-themed promotions when your concessionaires and sponsors are Coca cola/Pepsi/Red Bull (high-fructose corn syrup & caffeine), Budweiser/Miller/Coors (alcohol) and Kraft foods (subsidary of R.J. Reynolds, the tobacco guys). Not to mention your ballplayers have their cheeks stuffed with sunflower seeds/bubble bum that sure looks an awful lot like Redman/Kodiak. Not that using tobacco is legal in the minor leagues. ;-)
–Nonetheless, you’d think the front offices could partner with a local public health clinic for a “Quitter’s Night”–come in and pledge to quit tobacco/fatty foods/soft drinks for the rest of the season. Or why not a local version of “The Biggest Loser” for the season?
–Wouldn’t it be great if players would visit local middle and high schools to talk to kids about the ethics of cheating–whether it be amphetamines, steroids, pine tar or vaseline? Instead of a Knothole Club or Kids Club, why not create a partnership with local school baseball/softball teams–an “I Won’t Cheat” honor club. Offer a player’s clinic for members of the “I Won’t Cheat” club, and bring in the team trainers and strength coaches for a quick chat about training.
–Anyway, tell the minor league GMs out there about these promotional gems, no charge! . . .BeesGal
