Baseball Responds (Updated 1/19)

haitimap.jpgI’m certainly not providing any new information here, but nonetheless thought it might be worthwhile to provide some links to MLB and MiLB.com earthquake coverage.

There are 13 Minor League players who were born in Haiti. The full list can be found HERE. The vast majority of these players suited up in the Dominican Summer League last season, the only one to play stateside was Reginal Simon of the Williamsport Crosscutters. A brief article on Astros’ farmhand Dieudone Paul can be found HERE.

Meanwhile, MLB has announced that it is donating $1 million to Unicef. Details on that can be found HERE. If YOU would like to donate to Unicef, click HERE. And as you are no doubt aware, $10 can be donated to the Red Cross simply by texting “Haiti” to 90999 (over $5 million has been raised through this effort alone, a rate of over $200,000 an hour).

I have yet to come across any team-specific fund-raising efforts, but I’ll certainly share that information when and if I receive it.

Update: The San Jose Giants announced Friday that they have donated $1,000.
Update 2: The Visalia Rawhide announced Friday that April 21 will be a “Haiti Relief Drive” evening. All ticket sales from the event will be donated to the relief effort, and the club is asking fans attending the game to donate goods at the stadium.
Final Update: An article is now up on MiLB.com which chronicles the Minor League response. Click HERE.

Thank you for tolerating this brief diversion from the usual frivolous Biz Blog nonsense.
