The Cream Sticks Rise to the Top
Therefore, I was pleased when my recent post on Asheville's Beer Race prompted the Akron Aeros to get in touch. Calvin Funkhouser, the Aeros excellently-named director of corporate and suite sales, sent me an email regarding his team's "ACME Cream Stick Race."
Writes Funkhouser:
Our local grocery store sponsor, ACME Fresh Market, stepped up to sponsor the nightly Cream Stick Race. Our three cream sticks -- Chocolate, Maple, and Vanilla -- race from the left field corner to the opposite end of the first base dugout. Each ACME store has a bakery that makes delicious cakes, donuts, and, of course, cream sticks.
This cream stick race is not for the faint of heart. Our Pepsi promo crew runs it each night and cream sticks end up getting pushed over the wall, into the dugout, and I've even had Pepsi promo crew members come up bleeding when the race is over. It's a rough and tumble race. But the fans love it because each cream stick represents a section and the winning section gets coupons for free cream sticks.
While it is generally my policy not to glorify cream stick on cream stick violence, I will make an exception in this case. To the photographic evidence!
This race was so exhilarating, it even captured the attention of purple-haired weirdos:
Keep your hands to yourself, chocolate:
As in the first picture, Vanilla adopts his signature "running while touching his face" pose.
I wonder if the Aeros play songs by Cream during this race. Or, better yet, a Cream-Styx mash-up.
On another note, please check out the 2009 debut of "Crooked Numbers" (formerly known as "Beyond The Box Score"). As far as I know, you can't find this info anywhere else. Writing about statistical oddities is among my favorite pastimes these days, right up there with purchasing an out-of-pocket health insurance plan.
As always, feel free to get in touch:

This is too funny! Just the cure I needed after spending three days with 200 &th & 8th graders!
