On Friday, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies revealed that they will take the field as the “Spiedies” on May 26th.

Spiedies are, quite simply, marinated cubes of meat that are grilled on a spit and placed on a roll. They are a Binghamton staple and a natural choice as a Rumble Ponies alternate identity.

“It is a brand that everyone knows, not only in [New York’s] Southern Tier, but if you go anywhere people have heard of Spiedies,” said Rumble Ponies managing director JB Bayne, during a team event that was streamed on Facebook Live.

When I visited Binghamton last season, my Designated Eater enjoyed this chicken spiedie sandwich at the ballpark.

The Binghamton Spiedies logo was designed by Brandiose. Along with providing an image of the Spiedies hat, Brandiose provided some information on the delicacy’s origin.

The Empire State is currently well-represented on the alternate food identity front so far in 2018. The Binghamton Spiedies join the Rochester Plates and the Syracuse Salt Potatoes in New York state’s current “team playing as regional delicacy” lineup. Staten Island (Cannoli) and Brooklyn (Slices) have a history of food identities but have yet to announce their respective promo schedules for the upcoming season.

The Salt Potatoes and Plates are rivals; it is unknown if the Spiedie has any enemies.

I’ll have more info on the Spiedies in the near future. For now, I’ll leave with you this.
